Helping Your Child at Home

Here are some suggestions for how you can help your child become a better learner and show that you care.

• Encourage you child and express your pride in his or her efforts and accomplishments.
• Make sure your child gets eight or nine hours of sleep each night.
• Keep your child healthy by providing:
  1. regular medical checkups and booster shots
  2. a balanced diet
  3. regular exercise
  4. clean hair and fresh clothes

• Please notify me of any medical problems.
• Make sure your child has a good attendance record. Missing school means children fall behind in their work. They become anxious and frustrated when they can't keep up.
• Establish a time and place for studying. Give your child a quiet corner to read and do homework.
• Discuss homework assignments and discreetly monitor the child's progress. Offer praise or help when appropriate.
• Your child will regularly bring home completed papers and assignments for you to review. Ask to see these graded papers.

• Read to your child, and encourage him or her to read to you. Let your child see you reading. Remember: the best way to communicate the importance and value of reading is to read. Be a reading role model.
• Be an effective reading tutor by asking your child to find specific details in a passage, paraphrase a paragraph, or describe a character.
