Health summarized the results of their research on how children
learn reading. One of the major findings was that effective reading
instruction includes phonics instruction.

In 1997, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development
reported on the results of over 30 years of research on reading.
Among the findings was that children who are not phonemically aware
develop an inability that the distinguishing characteristic of persons
with reading disabilities.
