This fall, young viewers will have a new network to watch—the CW.
The new channel is a combination of two TV networks that will soon be going off the air—the WB and UPN. The "C" in CW stands for CBS Corporation, which owns UPN. The "W" stands for Warner Brothers, owner of the WB.
"Every change is an opportunity,'' said Andrew Butcher, a spokesman for News Corporation, which owns several stations affiliated with UPN.
The new network's programs will mainly target female viewers ages 18-24. It will feature some of the most successful shows from both the WB and UPN, including Gilmore Girls, Smallville, Beauty and the Geek, America's Next Top Model, Everybody Hates Chris, and Smackdown! Some shows will not make it into the CW's fall lineup, however. The WB is canceling 7th Heaven.
The CW will take on a schedule similar to the WB's. Weekday afternoons from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday mornings will feature children's programming, similar to what is now known as Kids' WB. Primetime shows will air on weeknights from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday evenings from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Network executives hope this merger will help attract more talented writing teams, and in turn, produce creative new shows to add to this fall's programming.
