Different sea creatures live at different depths in the ocean. But some things can't live in the ocean at all! On the activity page, students can help Lizzie find the things that don't belong in the ocean.

Here are some extension ideas related to the activity page.

Science
Encourage children to cut out photos of ocean plants and animals from old magazines and brochures. Gather the group together and discuss the photographs. Have children sort the pictures. Ask which are plants and which are animals? Paste onto pieces of oaktag (one labeled "plants," the other "animals") and hang in the Science Center.

Math
Explore sand and water! Children can work at a sand table or with a sand-filled tub. Ask, How does sand feel when it's dry? How does sand feel when it's wet? Which weighs more? Challenge children to create channels in the sand for water to flow through.

Social Studies
Share a world map or globe with children. Help children distinguish between land and water, and point out where each is located. Do you see more land or water? Invite children to make imaginary world maps that contain oceans and land masses and names for them.

Art
Make sparkling saltwater scenes. Measure equal parts salt, flour, and water in a bowl. Scoop the mixture in a cup and pour through a funnel into several squeeze bottles. Add a different-colored paint to each bottle and shake it well. Let children use the bottles to create salty paintings of ocean life. When the paintings dry, children will have a big surprise.
