Raised by the Pack
Who helps a wolf pup grow up? Its mom does. Its dad does too. But they aren’t the only ones. Wolf pups are raised by the whole pack, or family group
A Pack and Its Pups
A wolf pack is made up of the whole wolf family. That means parents, pups, and the pups’ adult brothers and sisters. All the adults care for the pups.
Mom Digs a Den
Before the pups are born, the wolf mother digs a den. The den is a safe place for the pups. There, the mother snuggles with the pups to keep them warm. She feeds them milk from her body.
Food From the Family
After a while, the pups are ready for meat. They are not ready to chew it, though. So the adult wolves help out. They eat meat and spit it up into the pups’ mouths. That may seem like a gross way to eat, but the pups love it!
Playing With the Pack
The adult wolves run and play with the pups. Playing is fun. It is also good exercise for the pups. It makes them fast runners. When they grow up, they will be good at chasing and hunting animals.
A New Place in the Pack
After one year, the pups are adults. They can hunt for animals like elk with the pack. They can even help take care of newborn pups. That’s what being in a pack is all about!
Think! For Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, talk about how your family cares for you.
Wolves Say It Without Words
Wolves in a pack communicate with each other. That means they show what they want and how they feel.
Here I Am!
A wolf howls to let others know it is near.
I’m Mad!
A wolf growls and shows its teeth when its angry.
Let’s Play!
A wolf shows it wants to play by bowing down with its ears up.
