Historic Arts and Crafts
Let your creative juices flow with these activities based on the Dear America and Royal Diaries books.

Conjure up the past with a historical art project.
What you need:
• URL: http://www.scholastic.com/dearamerica/activities/crafts/index.htm
• supplies vary depending on the project
What to do:
1. Log on to Dear America's Arts & Crafts page, located in the Kids area of Scholastic.com.
2. Try the crafts featured on the home page. You can find new crafts posted every month. Each activity contains both directions and information about the time period in which the book is set. Did you know that the Pilgrims baked ginger cake?
3. Next, search for more crafts, where you can find activities related to more of the Dear America and Royal Diaries books. Have you and your daughter read all of the books? If not, try doing the crafts while you read the book together to truly make it come alive.
4. If there aren't any crafts for your favorite Dear America book, use the Internet or library resources to try to find some and make them together. Try to find out what people ate during that time period, what they might have done at a party or during a holiday, or what they might have made as a gift.
Learning benefits:
• creativity
• learning about history
• experiencing activities and crafts created during other time periods
