Internet Field Trip: Worldwide Diaries

Remember those old lock-and-key diaries that you kept hidden from family and friends? Well, times sure have changed! In the 21st century, diary-writers are putting their thoughts and dreams out in cyberspace for the world to read.

Some diaries become a way for people to understand world events, like wars. The most famous of these diarists is Anne Frank — the young Jewish girl whose journal about life while hiding from the Nazis during WW II eventually touched the hearts of millions. In a more modern war diary, a soldier writes about his experiences while stationed in Bosnia.

Historical diaries are a great way to find out, firsthand, about life long ago. Be sure to visit A Diary from Dixie, a southern woman's account of life during the Civil War.

Serving as a nurse in Civil War-era Washington, Walt Whitman treated all soldiers who needed his aid - Union and Confederate, black and white. In time, Walt saw that his writing could give these men a voice and capture the true spirit of America. "The brilliantly inventive paintings add vibrant testimonial to the nuanced text." - SLJ.
