Getting Students Organized

Helping Your class Start the Year Off Right

Some students at the middle school/junior high level still have trouble getting organized. I have found by modeling good organization skills most students will follow. Here are some ways that I guide students:

  • I stay on top of keeping the classroom organized (bookshelves, storage for class work, etc.)
  • We follow a daily routine.
  • Every student keeps a schedule. Our school furnishes assignment books. Every day on the board I have the weekly schedule of assignments, projects, test, and so on for the students to copy into their assignment book
  • Another strategy I have used for students who are really disorganized is an accordion file folder for all their assignments

Of course, there is still that student who walks through the door with half of his or her assignments hanging out of books and then looks around the room as if it is a new classroom.
