What you need:

  • Old magazines
  • Child-safe scissors
  • Glue
  • Posterboard or cardboard
  • Marker
  • X-acto knife
  • Clear contact paper
  • Yarn or string

What to do:

  1. With your toddler, look through magazines for pictures of different kinds of nutritious foods. Are there pictures of apples? Can you find photos of milk and cheese? Try to get a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grain breads and cereals, and lean meats.

  2. Cut out pictures of the foods and glue them to pieces of posterboard. Use the marker to write the type of food underneath each picture. Cover the pictures with the clear contact paper.

  3. Use the X-acto knife to cut holes in the cardboard. String yarn through each hole to hold your book together.

  4. Read the book with your child and talk about why it's important to eat healthy food. What healthy foods does your child like to eat for breakfast? What are some of her favorite dinner foods?

  5. In the kitchen, show your child some of the foods you've been looking at in the book. Invite her to find pictures in the book that match the foods in your cupboard and refrigerator.

Learning benefits:

  • Introduces different kinds of food
  • Supports vocabulary development
  • Encourages healthy eating habits
