Women make up more than 20% of superintendents, up from 16% in 2000 and 6.6% in 1992.

Why are there so few female superintendents? Even though the number of women in the job has been steadily growing, many of them feel that a “glass ceiling” keeps superintendents mostly male. That’s just one of the interesting opinions uncovered in the latest survey of 1,338 superintendents nationwide released by the American Association of School Administrators. It is the organization’s first such survey since 2000 to take a hard look at the details of superintendents’ thoughts on their profession.

Stress is skyrocketing as superintendents face increased expectations and fewer resources.

34% of superintendents report moderate stress levels, 44% report considerable stress in their jobs, 15% report very great stress.

93% of superintendents say their relationship with their school boards is good or very good.
