Literacy Ranking Numbers
What do educators, and students, have to show for five years of work on literacy?
Not much, according to the Department of Ed’s newest Progess in International Reading Literacy Study, released in November. Just as the first time the literacy survey was given, in 2001, students in the United States ranked in the middle of the pack.
The highest-scoring country was Russia, with its neighbors Hong Kong and Singapore also near the top.
One interesting fact: Average scores for girls were higher than average scores for boys in 43 of the 45 participating education systems, including the United States.
