Every Day is Earth Day, Say Scholastic Kids

Unlike Valentine's Day or New Year's Eve, kids are celebrating Earth Day "every day," according to the Kids' Environmental Report Card poll.
Their daily observance of this worldwide event includes actions aimed at reducing, recycling, and reusing — the three "Rs" of global stewardship.
Earth Day was created in 1969 by former Wisconsin governor and U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson. "At a conference in Seattle in September 1969, I announced that in the spring of 1970 there would be a nationwide grassroots demonstration on behalf of the environment and invited everyone to participate," Nelson recalled.
About 20 million people participated in the first Earth Day celebration. Today 500 million people in over 180 countries take part in this popular annual event.Once A Year — Not Enough!
Like the majority of Environmental Report Card respondents, many people observe Earth Day throughout the year. They make extra efforts to ensure that their actions will not harm the planet and its human, plant and animal inhabitants.
"Every day should be Earth Day, not just April 22 or whatever day it is. Let the music (and the magic) take your mind," wrote NewBookDUDE, a regular poster on Scholastic's Save the Planet message board.
