Your Career
What Will You Wear Today?
Keep these tips in mind and your wardrobe will be your enemy no more.
•Rule of Three
Stick with three simple purchases-slacks, skirts, and tops-so you can mix and match for a variety of styles.
1. Slacks: Find a style that fits well, and buy several pairs in neutral colors.
2. Skirts: A nicer, more dressy option. Watch the length, as you probably sit, squat, and reach up throughout the day.
3. Tops: Avoid low-cut or formfitting shirts, and opt for more practical but flattering blouses.
•Keep it Real
Remember, you're in the classroom, not on a runway. While it's fun to dress up and experiment with your style, can you really round up the kids after recess in four-inch heels? Your job requires a lot of hands-on work; dress for comfort first, and you'll thank yourself later.
•Bring Backup
Keep an extra pair of nice shoes and a blazer in a closet at school. If you suddenly have a meeting or an important, unexpected guest, you'll be prepared to impress. Also keep an extra sweater, a pair of comfortable shoes, and a stain remover stick-just in case!
•Style Watch
Take a look at the teachers around you. Whom do you admire most, and what are they wearing? Ask yourself what the standard is for your community-is it formal, or more casual? These observations can help you establish guidelines for your own clothing choices.
We asked teachers what clothing they just can’t live without.
“Black flats. I’m on the go all day. Sore feet aren’t an option!” —Allison Wiesel, Highland Park, NJ
“Cardigan and watch. As a traveling teacher, I know each classroom has its own temperature and a clock with a mind of its own.” —Jodie Kirk, Bronx, NY
“Hair ties. I have to keep my hair out of my face with all the moving around I do.” —Nicole Hughes, Pelham, AL
“Polar fleece. It’s perfect for chillier days, or in the A/C. I have it on hand from fall to spring.” —Jeremy Brunaccioni, Gill, MA
“My ‘Go-to School Sweater.’ It matches absolutely everything!” —Elizabeth Peterson, Amesbury, MA

“A friend of mine wore a pretty white dress to school, but you could see her bright blue thong right through it!”
