We Love Our School Nurses
Tummy aches, head lice, asthma . . . the list of ailments school nurses deal with on a daily basis makes them indispensable—almost. Regrettably, many school districts have been forced to eliminate the position due to severe budget cuts; 25 percent of public schools have no nurse at all. At others, part-timers handle multiple schools. What’s a parent to do? It helps to be proactive:
Share all health issues about your child with his teacher so she is aware and can assist as best she can.
Encourage your child to be honest and open about what hurts with the school nurse or other school health care attendant.
Advocate for school nurses! Contact your school superintendent and let him know the position is vital to every child’s well-being.
