There is growing practical research and implementation ideas for using think-alouds. The following resources, many available in the Teacher Store, can help you implement these strategies into your reading instruction.

 

Professional Books

  • The most comprehensive and on-point book of this nature is
    Improving Comprehension With Think-Aloud Strategies by Jeff Wilhelm (Scholastic, 2001).
  • The most comprehensive and on-point book for teaching reading strategies through drama/action techniques is Action Strategies for Deepening Comprehension by Jeff Wilhelm (Scholastic, 2002).
  • You Gotta BE the Book: Teaching Engaged and Reflective Reading With Adolescents, by Jeff Wilhelm (Teachers College Press, 1997), describes how think-alouds can be used as a teacher research and assessment technique that helps teachers, and how think-alouds can be used to teach readers.
