Scholastic, Inc. honors students who are turning around their academic performance through the READ 180 program. The READ 180 All-Star Awards recognize students in grades 4–12 who have successfully participated in Scholastic’s reading intervention program designed for students who read at least two years below proficient level.

Every day, 3,000 students in the U.S. drop out of school, and the majority of them are poor readers. Researchers contend that many of those students can be identified as early as the sixth grade. Does this mean that students still struggling to read in middle school are destined to fail to graduate? “It is never too late to learn to read,” says Margery Mayer, president of Scholastic Education.

The READ 180 All-Star winners have overcome a number of obstacles that stood in the way of their academic success. Recipients faced difficulties ranging from frustration and low self-esteem to learning English as a second language, special education classification, and physical and emotional challenges.

The nine READ 180 All-Stars will each receive a $1,000 check from Scholastic to be used toward furthering their education. The winning students’ nominating teachers will receive $1,000 worth of Scholastic READ 180 books and materials for their classrooms. More information is available at www.scholastic.com/read180 .
