June's Three Big Deals
The Texas Education Agency selected Read Now With Power Up!, produced by Steck-Vaughn and Renaissance Learning, Inc., as one of nine programs for inclusion in the state’s Intensive Reading Initiative/Intensive Math Initiative (IRI/IMI) list of approved curriculum materials. To support the initiative, the Texas legislature allocated funds for the 2006–07 school year to campuses with the most difficulty in improving reading or math achievement.
Irvine (CA) Unified School District signed a seven-year optical networking contract with AT&T. The company will implement an Optical Ethernet Metropolitan Area Network (OPT-E-MAN) to support bandwidth-intensive applications such as video streaming and distance learning at 32 locations throughout the district. The OPT-E-MAN service will provide schools with a single reliable network, as well as a converged solution for streamlined communications district-wide.
The San Ramon Valley (CA) Unified School District and the Santa Clara County Office of Education, which provides services to the county’s 32 school districts, upgraded their networks with the Cisco Unified Communications system. The new system replaces aging private branch exchange (PBX) phone systems and combines wireless, Internet protocol (IP) telephony, and security services on a single platform, providing secure data services, as well as helping to reduce costs.
