Movers & Shakers

June , 2006

Billy K. Cannaday Jr. will be Virginia’s next superintendent of public instruction. Governor Timothy M. Kaine selected Cannaday, who has been head of the Chesterfield County school system in Richmond since 2000. Cannaday will oversee the state’s K–12 school system and institute education policies such as statewide testing. He replaces Jo Lynn DeMary, who retired in January.

Peter Gorman, superintendent of the Tustin (CA) School District, has been offered the position of superintendent of Charlotte-Mecklenburg (NC) Schools. He has yet to sign a contract, but his proposed annual salary would be about $300,000, an increase of at least $100,000 from what he earned at Tustin.

Rock Point (AZ) Community School’s board of directors hired Peter Belletto, former superintendent of Ganado (AZ) Unified School District, as its executive director. Belletto was fired from his position at GUSD in July 2005 for allegedly misspending millions of dollars in district funds.

Lynn Lyndes resigned as superintendent of the Bradford (NY) Central School District, citing differences with the school board. The primary issue concerned the annexation of the Campbell-Savona School District, which faces a $1 billion deficit. Lyndes’ decision follows a vote in April by the school board to support the state Education Department’s ruling to temporarily halt the annexation process.
