Awards From HP, the DoE, and Gates

HP is awarding 170 schools across the United States and Puerto Rico more than $7 million in mobile technology, cash, and professional development as part of its 2006 HP Technology for Teaching grant program. Recipients include 130 K–12 public schools and 40 two- and four-year colleges and universities. The program is designed to improve student achievement through the innovative uses of technology in the classroom while encouraging student interest in careers in science, technology, engineering, and math. Louisiana is receiving $24 million in federal aid for the development of charter schools. The grant, announced by Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings, will allow for widespread use of charter schools in a state where, post-Katrina, the public school system is barely functioning.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation awarded North Carolina $10.4 million to reform the state’s high schools. The money will help build smaller high schools focusing on economic development themes and support the establishment of early college high schools. North Carolina also received $11 million from the Gates Foundation in August 2003. As a result, the state formed the New Schools Project, which continues to make strides in the creation of new, smaller schools.
