Books to Compliment The Tale of Despereaux

By Ruth Manna

Unit Plan: A Lively Read of The Tale of Despereaux

One professional resource, plus other books by Kate DiCamillo.

The Fluent Reader by Timothy V. Rasinski, James Hoffman (Introduction by)
The Fluent Reader is full of practical, easy-to-implement strategies to build reading fluency and comprehension. It's a quick read and you'll come away with great ideas.

Classroom Tip: I read this book on a beach in Puerto Rico in summer 2004 and knew immediately that there were many ideas I could adapt and use in my classroom. My salt-water-stained copy has seen lots of use since then. Even if you don't have time to read now, buy a copy and keep it for next summer's reading!

Mercy Watson to the Rescue by Kate DiCamillo
The adventures of Mercy Watson, a pig adopted by the human Watson family. The story has a chain of hysterically funny events and ultimately Mercy saves the day. A book for beginning readers in grades K-2. This is the first book in what will be a series of six chapter books about Mercy written for young readers. Colorful, captivating illustrations.

Classroom Tip: A suggestion for further reading for those 2nd graders who are ready for simple chapter books.

Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo
Opal and her dog, Winn-Dixie, make friends in her new hometown in Florida. This book is full of wonderful characters. Many students will have seen the film version.

Classroom Tip: Although Because of Winn-Dixie's themes and content are more for older readers, there may be one or two students who have seen the movie and will enjoy reading the book.

The Tiger Rising by Kate DiCamillo
The story of 12-year-old Rob Horton, who finds a caged tiger in the woods and a new friend, Sistine, as he comes to grips with his mother's death. This dark tale is for older readers, ages 9 to 12.

Classroom Tip: I include this book because it was written by Kate DiCamillo. It is not for young readers.

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo
A brand new book due out in February 2006.
