In a great green room, tucked away in bed, is a little rabbit saying goodnight: to mittens and kittens, to socks and clocks, to a picture of three little bears sitting in chairs...And a comb and a brush and a bowl full of mush/And a quiet old lady who was whispering "hush." All that's familiar deserves a goodnight wish, and the bunny child obliges, getting sleepier and sleepier as the room slowly darkens.
The rhythm of this bedtime poem, a modern classic in children's literature, is as sweet as any lullaby, and Clement Hurd's gentle illustrations, some color, some black-and-white, are the perfect complement. Encourage not-so-sleepy little ones to look closer on second reading — finding the tiny mouse who sneaks into every color picture can be a soothing bedtime activity.
