Author Visit Kit

By Todd Mitchell

Todd Mitchell is an award winning writer and teacher, and the author of the young adult novel, The Traitor King. He has over twelve years of teaching experience working with aspiring writers of all ages. Currently, Todd serves as the Director of the Creative Writing Teaching Program at Colorado State University. He specializes in ways to teach creative writing and can present on a wide range of writing topics. A typical full-day visit would include a large group presentation, two or three single class sessions, and book sales and signing. Below are some presentation possibilities, or Todd can design a presentation to fit your needs.

Large Group Presentation (for Elementary and Middle School Audiences):

-The Magic of Writing. Those who wish they could travel through time, see someone else's dreams, live other lives, and teleport to different lands only have to look at the wonder of reading and writing to know that such magic is possible. In this interactive presentation, Todd shows students why reading and writing are important, while inspiring them to see a bit of magic in their own schools. He also reveals how writers cast their spells by illustrating the writing and publishing process. A short author reading and question and answer session can be included. Power Point will be used for visuals, if equipment and screen are available.

Single Class Sessions (descriptions available upon request):
- Poetry Writing Games (3-6 grade)
- Story Writing Workshop (5-8 grade)
- Writing Fantasy/Sci-Fi (6-12 grade)
- Making Leaps in Poetry (6-12 grade)
- The Story of a Book (9-12 grade)
- Fiction Writing Sessions (9-12 grade). These sessions can focus on a variety of craft related issues such as plot, character, dialogue, setting, description, revision, and what makes stories work.

Teacher Sessions:
- Teaching Poetry to Children (for 3-6 grade teachers)
Todd gives teachers a variety of writing exercises and techniques they can use in the classroom to inspire students to surprise themselves with writing, create writing that is meaningful to them, and discover the enjoyment of playing with words. This session works particularly well in tandem with one of the "Poetry Writing Games" sessions.
