Author Visit Kit

As both author and illustrator, Paul Brett Johnson brings to his school and library programs a dual perspective.

"I usually begin by telling students a bit about myself, followed by a performance of one of my books or a work in progress. Next I use role-playing and free association to involve students in creating a story idea of their own. We then take that idea through all the steps that would be necessary to turn it into a book. Additionally, I show original illustrations, "dummy" books, manuscript revisions, press sheets and other items to help students understand the entire publishing process: writing, revising, submitting to an editor, illustrating and printing. I especially emphasize the importance of revision. Each session ends with questions from the audience."

Paul also offers a hands-on workshop that incorporates both writing and illustrating activities for smaller groups, Grades 3–5.
