Learn about my "Adventures in Writing" as I share stories about my award-winning children's books in this fun, interactive presentation.

The theme for the presentations is "Adventures in Writing":

  • My presentation for grades 3 - 8 lasts approximately 45 minutes.
  • My presentation for grades K - 2 lasts approximately 30 minutes.
  • My presentation for adults/families lasts approximately 35 minutes.

Equipment needs: an overhead projector, a screen, two small tables (or one table and one empty AV cart), and a microphone.  (Even if the room is small, please have a mic available.)

Room requirements: a room that can be darkened so that everyone can see the screen; seating arranged so that everyone can see the screen.

Schedule: Please allow 45 minutes for the initial set-up, and 15 minutes between sessions.  I can split the day between two sites (with adequate set-up time).

Also available is a speech based on my book, What To Do About Alice?  Entitled Eating Up the World: How Alice Roosevelt Drove Her Father Teddy Crazy, this 20-minute presentation takes an entertaining look at why Theodore Roosevelt was once prompted to exclaim, "I can be president of the United States, or I can control Alice.  I cannot possibly do both." — and why biographies for children matter.

Preparation:   Student groups should be familiar with my books.

Travel: Transportation should be arranged to and from the airport, hotel, and schools.

Food:  I'm a vegetarian.  Dairy/eggs are ok, but nothing that used to move.

Contract info: I publish under my maiden name (Barbara Kerley) but conduct all business under my married name (Barbara Kelly).  All my photo ID is under the name Barbara Kelly.

Theodore Roosevelt had a small problem. Her name was Alice. Alice Lee Roosevelt was hungry to go places, meet people, do things. Father called it running riot. Alice called it eating up the world. Whether she was entertaining important White House visitors with her pet snake or traveling the globe, Alice bucked convention and turned every new experience into an adventure! Brimming with affection and wit, this spirited biography gives readers a peek family life inside the White House. Prose and pictures spring, gambol, and two-step across the pages to celebrate a maverick American heroine.
