By Lulu DelacreLulu Delacre, born in Puerto Rico to Argentinean parents, takes pride in writing and illustrating books that portray her culture with authenticity: "I dreamed of creating books inspired by my heritage, books that celebrate the rich folklore and colorful traditions I was nurtured with as a child, books in English and in Spanish."
The two times Pura Belpré Honor winner has created several audiovisual presentations for young audiences, including:
- The path to Golden Tales and the research behind it. A slide show; a reading of some of the tales. (For grades 4 and up)
- Salsa Stories: a celebration of family, culture, and life. In this presentation Lulu shows how she used the remembered, the known, and the imagined, in order to create each of the nine heartwarming stories that make this unusual book. She also shares how she carved the linocuts for the illustrations. Salsa music and foods prepared from the recipes that appear in the book are encouraged in order to make the experience more meaningful to the students. (For grades 3-6)
- Celebrate with Latino Songs, Stories, and Food! This presentation focuses on the books Arroz con Leche: Popular Songs and Rhymes from Latin America and Salsa Stories. She explains why she felt the need to create Arroz con Leche and invite children to dance with her the arroz con leche game-song. Then, she reads a story from Salsa Stories, and explains how she created the art. With the host's help, a sampling of Salsa Stories' recipes may be offered. (For all ages including adults.)
Lulu also presents to adults. She gives teacher's workshops as well as speeches on subjects related to her work. She has presented in many venues including the National Museum of American History, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, the Capital Children's Museum, the Young Residents Associates in Washington D.C., and the Ponce Museum of Art and Carnegie Library in Puerto Rico.
She has been invited to speak at the International Reading Association, the University of Northern Colorado, the National Council of Teachers in English, the California Reading Association, Montgomery College Young Writer's Institute, the Spanish Institute, TESOL, Keene State College, the National Association for Bilingual Educators, Shenandoah University, USA IBBY, Atlanta University, the University of Minnesota, and the Early Childhood Conference.
