Introducing the Book

Here are a few strategies for introducing the book to the class.

  • Talk About the Title Read the book title to the class. Ask children if they notice anything interesting about the title. Ask: Are there any words that rhyme? Are there any words that start with the same sound? Three of the words name fruits. What are they? What do you think this book will be about?
  • On the Back Cover Read the rhyme on the back cover to the class. Ask children what they expect to do as they read this book. Have them describe other “I spy” books they know.
  • Meet Some Characters Recite a few nursery rhymes such as those given here. Tell the children that the characters in these rhymes also appear in Each Peach Pear Plum. Have children listen to hear the names of these characters when you read the book.

    Little Bo-Peep has lost her sheep,
    And can't tell where to find them.
    Leave them alone, and they'll come home,
    Bringing their tails behind them.

    Jack and Jill went up the hill
    To fetch a pail of water;
    Jack fell down and broke his crown
    And Jill came tumbling after.
