Important U.S. ally in the war on terror sees widespread protests and political instability
Pakistan, an important ally for the U.S. in anti-terrorism efforts, saw widespread political unrest in 2007. The country was plunged into violent protests at the news of the assassination of political opposition leader and former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, whose death is still under investigation. The status of democratic elections in 2008 is still unclear.
