Stephanie Calmenson
Biography
Stephanie Calmenson was born in 1952, and grew up in Brooklyn, where she also attended college. She never anticipated being a writer, and in fact resisted writing for a long time, convinced she wasn't good at it. But while studying for her master's degree in elementary education, she became enamored of picture books — and discovered that she wanted to write them as well as read them. Calmenson worked as an elementary-school teacher and as an editor of children's books before turning to writing full-time.
Though Calmenson has not worked in the classroom for many years, she keeps contact with students and teachers through school visits, and her awareness of what makes a book successful in their eyes comes through in her writing. While she does occasionally face writer's block, it doesn't last long, as her track record can attest: She is now the author of more than 100 books, which range in themes from concept books such as Dinner at the Panda Palace and It Begins with an A to amusing reworkings of familiar stories such as The Principal's New Clothes.
Calmenson lives with her dog, Rosie, a Tibetan Terrier whose training to become a working dog was chronicled in Calmenson's Rosie: A Visiting Dog's Story.
