Ellen Senisi

Biography

Photo-essayist Ellen B. Senisi was born in 1951 in Little Falls, New York, a small town on the Mohawk River. Though she would ultimately return to New York State, she spent a restless 14 years after high school attending seven colleges and living in 30 different places. After receiving her Bachelor's degree from the State University of New York at Oswego — the first of three degrees she holds — Senisi worked as a teacher in various public and private elementary schools for five years. She began taking pictures in the late 1970s and left teaching for graduate school in educational media and technology.

Since Senisi had always enjoyed writing, combining words and photographs to create picture books came naturally to her. Her first such book, Brothers and Sisters, was published in 1993. Since then, she has used her pictures to tell both nonfiction and fiction stories, and to introduce children to everything from nature to disabilities to varied family structures. She enjoys sharing her work in school visits and workshops.

Senisi and her husband live in Schenectady, New York. They have three children.
