Biography

TERESA MLAWER is President of Lectorum Publications, the largest and oldest distributor of Spanish-language books in the United States. Lectorum, a Scholastic Company, currently carries the greatest number of Spanish-language titles available domestically, with 20,000 titles from over 500 foreign and domestic publishers, serving book retailers, universities, public libraries and schools nationwide. Ms. Mlawer also serves as Editorial Director of Lectorum, where she oversees the selection and editorial development of Spanish-language books for children. Lectorum grew out of the former Librería Lectorum, the oldest Spanish-language bookstore in New York City, which was established in 1960 and garnered a reputation for its quality Spanish-language books. Ms. Mlawer has been at the helm of operations of Lectorum since 1976.

A pioneer in publishing books in Spanish in the United States, Ms. Mlawer has translated over 250 children's books from English to Spanish. She is also a dedicated advocate for literacy efforts and Hispanic authors. She is a passionate spokesperson for Scholastic's outreach initiative, Lee y serás, a national early literacy initiative for Latino children and families. In her role as Scholastic Family Reading Expert, Ms. Mlawer writes a bi-weekly column for the Spanish-language newspaper Hoy, offering reading tips and book suggestions for parents and children.

Born in Havana, Cuba, Ms. Mlawer began her editorial career at Macmillan, where she rose from a clerical position to head of Latin American sales. Later, she served as Vice President of Regents Publishing Company, a subsidiary of Simon and Schuster.
