Barbara McClintock

Biography

For advice on how to pursue a career as an illustrator, Barbara McClintock called up renowned artist Maurice Sendak (Where the Wild Things Are). He suggested that Barbara put together a dummy book, and move to New York City. Shortly after their conversation, she was living in New York, had acquired an agent, and was working on her first book.

Barbara McClintock's dreams of becoming a children's book illustrator began when she was a young girl. She would tirelessly draw pictures of animals and cartoon figures. When she was seven years old, her sister suggested she become a children's book illustrator, which is when, she says, she began her career.

Since then, her work has been recognized by the New York Times as the Best Illustrated Book (The Heartaches of a French Cat) and she was once chosen as Ms. Magazine's three favorite illustrators (1983).

Barbara McClintock lives in Connecticut with her husband and son.
