Neil Connelly
Biography
Keegan Flannery, the main character in St. Michael's Scales, first appeared in a short story Neil wrote during his first semester at McNeese State University. The story focused on an experience of Keegan's in sixth grade. “The character wouldn't leave me alone,” says Neil, “and I kept wondering what would happen to him when he reached high school. Pure curiosity drove me to work on the novel.” That novel turned out to be an explosive blend of humor, wrestling, religious guilt and self-discovery. Kirkus Reviews calls it “a richly layered, thought-provoking novel of how one boy learns to make weight.”
Currently a professor of English at McNeese State University, Neil's past professions ranged from landscaper to book store manager. “I plan to make a career of teaching writing,” states Neil, “as it gives me so much satisfaction and fuels my own work. And, of course, I plan to keep writing books.” He also runs a fiction workshop in the McNeese graduate program.
Neil Connelly currently lives in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
