Deborah Hopkinson

Biography

Deborah Hopkinson is the author of such award-winning children’s books as Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt; Girl Wonder: A Baseball Story in Nine Innings; A Band of Angels, and for the Dear America series, Hear My Sorrow.

Her nonfiction book, Shutting Out the Sky: Life in the Tenements of New York 1880-1924, published by Orchard Books in 2003, has garnered a great deal of acclaim. Among many honors, it was selected as one of the New York Public Library’s 100 Books for Reading and Sharing, as an NCSS/CBC Notable Social Studies Trade Book for Young People, a Sydney Taylor Notable Book, and a New York Public Library Book for the Teen Age. It was also awarded an NCTE Orbis Pictus Honor and a Jane Addams Children’s Peace Award Honor.

Deborah's stories and articles have appeared in Scholastic's Storyworks Magazine, as well as in Cricket and Ladybug. Deborah was born in Lowell, Massachusetts. She had a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Massachusetts and a master's in Asian Studies from the University of Hawaii. In addition to writing, Deborah works full-time as the Director of Foundation Relations at Oregon State University Foundation.

Deborah Hopkinson currently lives in Corvallis, Oregon.

    Hear My Sorrow

    Angela and her family, who immigrated to New York City from Italy, find themselves settled in a small tenement apartment on the Lower East Side. When her father is no longer able to work, Angela must leave school and work in a shirtwaist factory. Against the backdrop of the birth of the labor union movement in the early 1900s, Angela plays a part in the turmoil that erupts as the workers begin to strike, protesting the terrible conditions in the sweatshops.
