Bunyans Lesson Plan
In addition to being a great take on the Paul Bunyan myth, I use The Bunyans during author studies of both Audrey Wood and David Shannon. Students love trying to locate the states on the map. I think they view it as a treasure hunt.
OBJECTIVE
Students will "read globes and maps and follow narrative accounts using them." --Massachusetts History and Social Science Curriculum Framework
MATERIALS
- The Bunyans by Audrey Wood
- large wall map of the United States.
- Post It notes
SET UP AND PREPARE
Label the Post-it notes with the following: Mt. Ranier, Old Faithful, Arches National Park, Bryce Canyon, Big Sur, Monument Valley, Great Sand Dunes, Mammouth Cave, and Niagra Falls. I like to use the brightly colored Post-it notes so that they really stand out on the map.
DIRECTIONS
Using the information on the back flap of the book jacket as a guide, work with students to place the Post-it notes on the proper states.
LESSON EXTENSION
Use the internet to locate and learn more about these natural wonders.
