Carrot Seed Lesson Plan

The Carrot Seed is an easy way to introduce seeds as a unit of study. Students love to collect seeds and compare them in their museum.

OBJECTIVE
Students will "identify the structures in plants...that are responsible for ... reproduction...." --Massachusetts Science and Technology/Engineering Curriculum Framework

MATERIALS

  • The Carrot Seed by Ruth Krauss
  • assorted seeds (Anything from coconuts to poppy seeds.)
  • index cards, blank
  • writing pencils

SET UP AND PREPARE
Locate a shelf or table where students can safely create their seed "museum."

DIRECTIONS
Have a discussion about what a museum is. Explain that students will be creating a seed museum.

Fold the index cards in half, so they stand. (They should look like a name card at a dinner table.) Help students to label the cards with the name of the seed. Use a second index card to write a description of the plant the seed will grow into, or an illustration of the plant. Display the seeds and card in the classroom. Invite neighboring classes to come for a tour.

LESSON EXTENSION

In older grades, students can make audio recordings that tell about the various seeds. The recordings can be used as visitors tour the museum.

Visit a local museum and talk about proper museum etiquette. Expectations may vary for the type of museum being visited.
