Hallo-Wiener Lesson Plan

Dav Pilkey's sense of humor makes all of his books a hit with students. The Hallo-Wiener is a favorite. Students love seeing the "monster" revealed.

OBJECTIVE
Students will "use a variety of forms or genres when writing for different audiences." --Massachusetts English/Language Arts Curriculum Framework

MATERIALS

  • The Hallo-Wiener by Dav Pilkey
  • scissors
  • construction paper, beige
  • construction paper, light brown
  • construction paper, yellow
  • writing pencils, one per student
  • fine point markers, black
  • glue sticks

SET UP AND PREPARE
Use the copy machine to enlarge (to hot dog size) the image of Oscar running up the stairs. (It appears toward the beginning of the book.) Duplicate it a number of times, and run it off on the light brown paper. You will need one per student. When enlarging the image of Oscar, make sure it's the right size to fit in the construction paper "bun."

Cut the beige paper into rectangles roughly 3" X 6". You will need one per student.

DIRECTIONS
Students should make a horizontal fold across their beige paper. Next, use the scissors to round the corners of the paper, creating a card shaped like a hot dog bun. After they have cut out an Oscar image, use markers to highlight any details on Oscar. Use a glue stick to glue Oscar into the bun.

Using the yellow paper, cut out a zigzag strip to act as mustard. Glue it along the top of the bun.

Use the pencils to write Halloween sayings, across Oscar's side. Have students distribute them to friends or family. Happy Halloween!

LESSON EXTENSION

Have a spooky hot dog party. Add spooky features to the hot dogs, like olive eyes or a red pepper tongue.
