DIRECTIONS
- Write the word "travel" on the board. Asks students what they think the word means. Guide them to define travel as “to go from one place to another.”
- Ask for volunteers to share a story about a time when they traveled to another state. Instruct students to tell the class where they went, why, and how they got there. Use a map of the United States to point out where each student went.
- After a few stories, mention to students that airplanes are one of the fastest ways to travel long distances. Refer to a student’s story as an example, if appropriate. Point out New York and California on the map. Tell students that if they were to drive that distance, almost 3,000 miles, it would take more than two days to drive. If they were to fly on an airplane, it would only take a little more than six hours!
- Create a word web on the board with the word "airplane" in the middle. Ask students to name other words that are related to airplanes. Write these around the center word. Encourage students to share their own experiences with airplanes.
- Distribute At the Airport (PDF). Explain to students that they will be reading a short story about a family that takes a trip on an airplane. Read the instructions at the top of the page aloud. Then instruct students to complete the activity.
- Once they are finished, review the answers as a class. (Answers: 1. They buckled their seat belts; 2. He looked at all the tall buildings as they passed; 3. They got their tickets at the ticket counter.) Then, ask for volunteers to read their stories aloud.
