Warm-up and Wrap-up Quizzes
Before teaching Our Water, Our Planet, warm students up with a discussion-based quiz to test your class' knowledge about reducing waste. When you have completed the unit, test what your students have learned with the wrap-up quiz.
OBJECTIVE
To encourage class discussion prior to teaching Our Water, Our Planet, and assess student knowledge upon completion of the unit.
MATERIALS
Test Your Recycling IQ (PDF) (to be distributed after completing the unit)
DIRECTIONS
Before you begin the unit, ask the following questions in a format that encourages class discussion:
1. Do you think human behavior influences the environment?
2. What types of things do people do that harm the environment? (e.g.: littering, operating cars that pollute the air, leaving the lights on or the water running.)
3. What does "waste" mean? (To use more than you need.)
4. What does "reduce" mean? What about "reuse" and "recycle"? Can you think of some examples of each of these activities? (Reduce means to use less in the first place, like telling the salesperson that you don't need a bag. Reuse means to use again in the same or a different way, like using an old T-shirt as a rag. Recycle means to turn old, used things into something new, like returning all of your bottles and cans to the grocery store.)
5. Can you think of some items that can be recycled? (e.g.: plastic bottles, soda cans, newspaper, cardboard boxes.)
