Let's Be Artists!

Let’s Create a Collage!

Students make a collage and learn about the styles of various artists and illustrators.

OBJECTIVE

Students Will:

  • Read Alphabet Adventure by Audrey Wood, illustrated by Bruce Wood and talk about the illustrations.
  • Create a collage and compare it to the other art forms we've studied in this unit.

MATERIALS

  • Alphabet Adventure by Audrey Wood, illustrated by Bruce Wood
  • Various colors, sizes and textures of papers
  • Paper for the background
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Stencils for tracing shapes (optional)
  • Kidspiration by Inspiration Software, Inc. (Mac or PC version) or chart paper, or a blackboard for brainstorming

SET UP AND PREPARE

  • Gather and set up many kinds of papers.
  • Check the glue bottles.
  • Check the computer connection to the large screen monitor.
  • Computer and Kidspiration software

DIRECTIONS

Step 1: As a group, list what the children already know about collage.

Step 2: Read Alphabet Adventure by Audrey Wood, illustrated by Bruce Wood. Talk about the illustrations.

Step 3: Demonstrate how to create a collage. Stencils may be used to create shapes from various papers.

Step 4: Students create a collage that illustrates a mood, tells a story, or makes a picture of an object.

Step 5: Display the collages on a bulletin board or in a public viewing area.

Step 6: Using Kidspiration, list what the children learned about collage.

Step 7: Compare and contrast drawing, painting, sculpture, and collage.

LESSON EXTENSION
Display the different books that were used with this unit. Have students choose their favorite illustrator and explain why they like this person's work.

ASSESS STUDENTS
Teacher observation will assess student participation in contributing to the discussion and creating a collage. The comparing and contrasting activity will indicate student growth in understanding art mediums.
