"Tis The Season" Bulletin Board

Students bring something from home, that represents for them, their birthday's season. With the items they have, students learn the name of their birthday month and the name of the season in which it falls by.

OBJECTIVE

Students Will:

1. Learn their birthday month and season.
2. Bring in a seasonal object that makes them think of their birthday month.
3. Write/dictate at least one sentence about the object and relate it to a season. (Example: "I like to drink hot cocoa in the winter. It warms my tummy.")
4. Make a seasonal bulletin board that displays their objects brought from home with their stories.

MATERIALS

1. Lined paper
2. Pencils
3. Multicolored construction paper for mounting writing
4. T-Pins
5. Blank bulletin board
6. Glue
7. Digital or Polaroid camera (optional)

SET UP AND PREPARE

1. Send a note to parents explaining the activity.
2. Arrange for a few volunteers to help with the dictation.
3. Prepare the bulletin board by putting up the title, 'Tis The Season" and divid the board into four quadrants labeled Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall.
4. Get the school camera.

DIRECTIONS

Day 1
Step 1: Have students share their seasonal item from home. Help them pin their object to the bulletin board in the quadrant for the correct season. Use the camera to take a picture of the items that won't pin to the bulletin board.
 

Day 2
Step 1: In small groups, have the students generate a sentence about the seasonal object they brought from home. What do they do with it in their season? Why do they like it?

Step 2: Edit their papers and rewrite.

Step 3: Mount writing on construction paper.

Step 4: Put their story in appropriate quadrant along side the object brought to school.

LESSON EXTENSION
Play Greg and Steve's, We All Live Together CD. Teach "The Months of the Year" song in English and Spanish.

ASSESS STUDENTS
1. Observe students' ability to select a seasonal object.
2. Observe students' ability to name their birthday month and season.
3. Observe students' response to the writing prompts.
4. Observe students' ability to name all four seasons and describe the characteristics of each.

ASSIGNMENTS
Make a collage using magazine pictures of a season of choice. Include in the collage printed seasonal words that are found.

EVALUATE THE LESSON
1. Did students bring things to school on the set date?
2. Was there a plan for students who brought nothing?
3. Was there enough time?
4. Were most of the students able to connect objects with particular seasons?
5. How many students were frustrated?
