Clifford Goes to School and So Do We!

Students make a Clifford headband and make a sign in the shape of a large bone. The following rules are mounted on the sign.

Clifford follows these four rules:

  1. Be a Friend.
  2. Listen to the Teacher.
  3. Raise your hand.
  4. Clean up messes.

And so do we!!!!

On the first day of school, the student will go home looking like Clifford, holding a bone shaped sign that has the class rules posted on it, and will be able to recite the 4 rules in their own Clifford voice.

OBJECTIVE

Students Will:

  1. Follow step-by-step directions.
  2. Be able to list the 4 classroom rules.
  3. Be able to respond that rules are important because they keep us safe.

MATERIALS

  1. Red, white, and black construction paper
  2. Rubber bands
  3. Brads
  4. Patterns for Clifford's head, ear eyes nose and bone
  5. Printed rules:
    Clifford follows these four rules:
    1. Be a Friend.
    2. Listen to the Teacher.
    3. Raise your hand.
    4. Clean up messes.

    And so do we!!!!
  6. Glue
  7. Tongue depressors

SET UP AND PREPARE

  1. Template for Clifford head traced on red paper.
  2. Headbands folded with 2 brads and a rubber band.
  3. 1 ear traced.
  4. 1 giant bone traced/tongue depressor stick to hold bone.
  5. The rules printed.

DIRECTIONS
Read: Clifford Goes to School.

Step 1: List the mischief Clifford gets into.

Step 2: Brainstorm about the rules Clifford should follow. Note that rules keep us safe.

Step 3: List and explain our class rules:

1. Be a Friend.
2. Listen to the Teacher.
3. Raise your hand.
4. Clean up messes.

Step 4: Cut out Clifford head and glue to headband.

Cut out ear and glue to Clifford head.
Cut out eye and glue to Clifford head.

Step 5: Cut out bone and attach to tongue depressor.

Glue rules to bone.

Step 6: Wear headband and hold rules.

LESSON EXTENSION
Review consequences for not following classroom rules.

ASSESS STUDENTS
Teacher Observation: Students will be able to recite and explain the four classroom rules.

ASSIGNMENTS
Recite classroom rules to 3 people in your house. Explain how to follow each rule.

EVALUATE THE LESSON

  1. Were most students able to follow directions?
  2. Who can't cut with scissors?
  3. Was the speed of the activity too much for some students?
  4. What would I change next time I do this?
