Let's Celebrate!

COLLECTION
Christmas Is Coming

Let's Celebrate Christmas!

Students will learn about multicultural celebrations.

OBJECTIVE

Students Will:

  1. List prior knowledge of Christmas.
  2. Listen to books.
  3. Compare and contrast Christmas to other celebrations.
  4. Create a project.

MATERIALS

  1. The Light of Christmas by Richard Paul Evans (Author), Daniel Craig (Illustrator)
  2. Christmas (Rookie Read-About Holidays) by David F. Marx
  3. Construction paper — black, red, green, yellow
  4. Bulb patterns for tracing
  5. Glitter or hologram sticky paper for Christmas lights
  6. Yarn or roving for hanging Christmas lights
  7. Hole punch
  8. Scissors
  9. Glue
  10. Computer and Kidspiration software

SET UP AND PREPARE

  1. Cut rectangles of construction paper.
  2. Make enough bulb patterns out of tag board so that students can share.
  3. Cut a length of yarn or roving on which to string the lights.
  4. Plan where to display them in the classroom.
  5. Check glue bottles.
  6. Check computer connection to large screen monitor.

DIRECTIONS
Step 1: As a group, list what the children already know about Christmas on the Celebration chart.

Step 2: Read The Light of Christmas by Richard Paul Evans (Author), Daniel Craig (Illustrator) and Christmas (Rookie Read-About Holidays) by David F. Marx

Step 3: Using Kidspiration, list what the children learned about Christmas.

Step 4: Compare and contrast Ramadan, Diwali, Hanukkah, and Christmas.

Step 5: Create Christmas lights. Trace around a large Christmas light bulb pattern (See Christmas Light Shape (PDF) onto colored construction paper. Add glitter or hologram sticky paper to the screw end of the bulb. Punch a hole in the screw end and hang. Connect all of the bulbs with yarn to look like a string of Christmas lights.

Step 6: As a group create a letter to parents explaining about Christmas and the Christmas lights.

ASSESS STUDENTS
Teacher observation will assess student participation in listening to the book and contributing to the discussion.
