Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? Lesson Plan
I use Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? to help students learn to read by recognizing repetitive text and rhythm.
OBJECTIVE
Students read a wide range of print and non-print texts to build an understanding of texts, of themselves, and of the cultures of the United States and the world; to acquire new information; to respond to the needs and demands of society and the workplace; and for personal fulfillment.
MATERIALS
- Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin, Jr. and Eric Carle
SET UP AND PREPARE
First ask how many students have already heard this story. If they haven't heard the story, ask the students to predict what a brown bear might see. If they have heard the story, see if they can retell the story.
DIRECTIONS
Read the story as a class and encourage students to point out the rhythmic text and rhyme.
LESSON EXTENSION
Students can take digital photos of people who work at school. These photos can then be imported into iPhoto, organized and edited, and made into a book called "Students, Students, Who Do You See?"
Using the Brown Bear, Brown Bear word pattern, students can create an iPhoto book about transportation around the world. Global transportation photos are available for free educational use at http://edcommunity.apple.com/ali/story.php?itemID=794&version=7&collectionID=171
