Digital Photographers

Students will learn how to use a digital camera and edit the photos.

OBJECTIVE

Students will:

  1. Take photos with a digital camera.
  2. Upload the photos to a computer.

MATERIALS

  1. Digital still cameras
  2. Cable to connect to computer
  3. Macintosh computer with Mac OS 9.2 or higher
  4. iPhoto software
  5. TV connected to the computer (optional)

DIRECTIONS
Step 1: Demonstrate how to safely hold a camera. Remind the students to use the wrist strap or neck strap. Show the students how to look through the viewfinder or LCD panel to see what they are taking a picture of. Show them which button to push to take the picture.

Step 2: Allow each student to take a practice picture with the digital camera.

Step 3: Show the students how to use iPhoto to import the photos from the camera. First start the iPhoto software. Then they just connect the USB cable to the camera, remember to turn on the camera. IPhoto will recognize the camera. Click on the import button.

Step 4: After the photos are loaded, show the students how to view their photos in the organize mode of iPhoto.

Step 5: I show the students how to edit the photos by cropping, using the red eye button or clicking on the enhance wand. (You may want to duplicate the photos first or save photos you want to keep before the students start to edit. Once they have been edited you cannot get the original back.)

Step 6: Allow the students to practice editing a photo. This would work best in the computer center.

Step 7: In conclusion, have the students tell how to use a digital camera.
