Digital Video Photographers

Students will learn how to use a digital video camera and create an iMovie.

OBJECTIVE

Students will:

Take photos with a digital video camera.
Upload the photos to a computer.

MATERIALS

Digital video cameras
Cable to connect to computer
Tripod (optional)
Microphones (optional)
Macintosh computer with Mac OS 9.2 or higher
iMovie software
TV connected to the computer (optional)

DIRECTIONS
Step 1: Demonstrate how to safely hold a camera. Remind the students to use the wrist strap or neck strap. Or have the video camera on a tripod. Show the students how to look through the viewfinder or LCD panel to see what they are taking a video of. Show them which button to push to start the camera and which button to push to stop it.

Step 2: Allow each student to take a practice video with the digital video camera.

Step 3: Show the students how to use iMovie to import the photos from the camera. First start the iMovie software. Then they just connect the cable to the camera, remember to turn on the camera. iMovie will recognize the camera. Click on the import button.

Step 4: After the video is loaded, show the students how to create an iMovie by dragging clips to the Clip Viewer, adding titles and special effects. See the Digital Classroom Handout for step-by-step directions.

Step 5: Allow the students to practice editing the movie. This works best when they work with partners in a computer center.

Step 6: In conclusion have students review directions in operating the camera and creating an iMovie.
