Leaf Man Lesson Plan

Leaf Man is a great addition to our study of Fall. Students enjoy the leaf people in featured in the book, as well as collecting leaves.

OBJECTIVE
Students will "organize, classify, represent, and interpret data using ... Venn diagrams; interpret the representations."

MATERIALS

Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert
two hula hoops
brown paper bags, lunch size (one per student)

SET UP AND PREPARE
Label the lunch bags with the names of students.

This is an activity that should take place during the Fall. Remind students not to pick live leaves off of plants or trees. If you don't have access to real leaves, try using clip art to print some out.

If you're in an area that could contain poison ivy, become familiar with how to identify it, and then avoid it!

DIRECTIONS
Take students on a trip to collect leaves. Make sure they bring their lunch bags so they have something to put their collections in.

Back in the classroom, have students gather together with their bags of leaves. Place the hula hoops on the floor, overlapping them to create a Venn diagram. Choose a couple of leaves to sort by attributes and have students take turns adding their leaves. For example, if sorting by color, place a red leaf on the left, a yellow leaf on the right, and a red and yellow leaf in the center.

Try sorting by color and shape. Sorting could even occur for dry vs. non-dry leaves.

LESSON EXTENSION
Have students use paper and pencil to record one of the Venn diagram sorts.
