Moon Rope Lesson Plan

OBJECTIVE
Students will "retell a main event from a story heard or read." --Massachusetts English/Language Arts Curriculum Framework

MATERIALS

Moon Rope by Lois Ehlert
coat hangers (1 per student)
twine
construction paper
tape
markers
scissors

SET UP AND PREPARE
Be careful that students do not poke one another with the coat hangers.

DIRECTIONS
Have students draw and cut out the following: the crescent moon with worms on it, one or two birds, mole, and fox. Using the twine, attach the moon to the coat hanger. Next, attach the rope to the tip of the moon, with the fox on the rope. Attach the mole to a bird, and then attach the bird to the coat hanger as well. The result should be a moon mobile depicting the story. Give students the opportunity to retell the story with the help of their moon mobile.

LESSON EXTENSION

Read the book in Spanish and have students try to translate.
