  2. List fire safety rules.
  3. Illustrate a fire safety rule.

MATERIALS

  1. Clifford the Firehouse Dog by Norman Bridwell
  2. Red construction paper
  3. Small squares of white and black construction paper
  4. Writing paper
  5. Optional yellow paper
  6. Optional blue paper
  7. Chart paper or large Clifford-shaped red paper
  8. Glue
  9. Scissors

SET UP AND PREPARE

  1. Cut enough construction paper for each child to make a shape book cover.
  2. Cut 2-inch squares of white paper (Clifford's eyes).
  3. Cut 4-inch squares of black paper (Clifford's nose, eyebrows).
  4. Cut 1-inch squares of black paper (Clifford's irises in his eyes).
  5. Cut 12-inch squares of red construction paper.
  6. Cut 3 X 6-inch rectangles of red construction paper.
  7. Cut 12-inch squares of white writing paper.
  8. Optional — cut 4-inch square of blue paper (Fire hat badge).
  9. Optional — cut 4 X 18-inch rectangles of yellow paper (Fire hat base).
  10. Optional — cut 6 X 9-inch rectangles of yellow paper (Fire hat top).

DIRECTIONS
Step 1: Read Clifford the Firehouse Dog by Norman Bridwell.

Step 2: Discuss and list fire safety tips or rules. Write these either on chart paper or on a Clifford-shaped red paper.

Step 3: To make the Clifford shape book:
Have the students fold a 12-inch square of red paper diagonally. Leave the paper folded. From the 3 X 6 inch rectangles the students will cut large ovals for the ears. (See the illustration below.) Glue one end of an oval on the folded corner of the 12-inch square. Glue the other oval on the opposite folded corner. The students will cut small white ovals for the eyes and glue them on the large triangle. The students will cut two small black circles for the irises of the eyes. The students will cut a black nose for Clifford. Staple writing paper inside the red Clifford shape book. The students can decide how many pages they would like in their book. (Optional - a fire hat could be added to Clifford. Use the 4 X 18 inch rectangles to cut an oval for the fire hat base. Cut half a heart shape our of the 6 X 9 inch rectangle for the fire hat top. Cut a badge shape out of the 4-inch blue paper.)

Step 4: The students will write and illustrate a safety tip or rule in their Clifford shape book.

ASSESS STUDENTS
Teacher observation will assess student participation in listening to the book and the students' ability to follow directions in creating a Clifford shape book. The students' ability to write at least one fire safety rule in their book can be used to evaluate individual progress.

EVALUATE THE LESSON
How well do the children understand fire safety rules? How many needed help writing? How well did the students follow directions to make the Clifford book? What was the most difficult part of this lesson? What was most successful? Was the allotted time correct?
