"There was a French director named René Clair who didn’t want to use sound, but because everybody was using it he knew he had to. So where sound was absolutely necessary, he would use sound. But for the rest of the movie he would tell the story as much as possible with visuals. And this was another one of the inspirations that went into the idea of making a book that told its story in two different ways.”
