Practice Estimating When You Read a Map Together
Ask your child to help you plan an upcoming trip. First, get a road map of the area online or at your local library. Then have your child help you highlight the route you'll be taking. Finally, help your child use the map's legend to estimate the distance you'll be traveling. Later, when you take the actual trip, use your car's odometer to track the miles traveled, and compare the total to your child's estimation. For a variation, do the same thing with a hiking trail map, bike path map, or amusement park map.
